Christianity

Apr-Dec '18

(12/23/2018) The use & abuse of Christianity, Democrat style.  Suffice it to say that for the Democrats, Christianity is nothing but a tool to be used and abused to further the progressive political agenda.

(12/22/2018) Church Of England’s Transgender Baptisms Blaze Trail For 3 More Blasphemous Rites.  Another sigh is in order.  Churches are supposed to be helping people put aside their old life and putting on the new.  Instead, many focus on affirming the old and declaring no need for the new.

(12/22/2018) The spiritual and moral bankruptcy of 'progressive' Christianity.  Sigh.  So sad that so many create a "god" that just happens to conform to their own non-biblical views.

(12/21/2018) Witches fly high: New Agers outnumber membership of major U.S. church.  That would be the PCUSA, which we left back in the late 90's.  One of the best decisions we ever made.

(12/12/2018) Restoration Weekend Panel: Religious Liberty Under Attack. David Horowitz and Tony Perkins unravel the Left's hatred of Christians.  This is excellent.  I thought I was well informed about the Left and their attacks on Christianity.  I learned a lot more from this!  Read it!  You won't regret it.

(12/08/2018) 'Reasons Greetings' from Atheists Who Don't Live Up To It.  Well, if there is one thing we can be sure of, atheists absolutely, positively think they are smarter and more rational than believers.  And they keep telling us, over and over and over.

(12/06/2018) DNC Chair Tom Perez Complains That Voters Influenced By Church.  Interesting.  I have heard politics preached from the pulpit at liberal churches far more than at conservative ones.  And I am rarely at liberal churches.  Our church preaches the Bible.  I guess that Perez feels that the Democrats are not in tune with the Bible, and in that, he would be correct.

(12/06/2018) Female 'Pastor' Is Melting Down Purity Rings to Create a Golden Vagina.  Well, according to a study, "purity" is not on the radar of liberals when it comes to morality.  I guess this should be no surprise.

(12/04/2018) The #MeToo Era Has Its Own Version of the Bible Now.  Progressive "Christians" have been re-creating God in their own image for a long time.

(12/02/2018) Liberal Commentator Claims Bible Actually Encourages Abortion: “That’s a Fact.”

(11/24/2018) Atheist Memes: Would Science Survive Past Christianity?  One thing about atheist memes.  They assume no God, so naturally their meme excludes the possibility of God.

(11/04/2018) What If We Listened to the ‘Progressive’ Christians?  They seem to be claiming that we conservatives are letting politics drive our theology, but it is quite the reverse.  Progressive Christians have been mutilating the Bible for years.  Abortion?  SSM?  Big government, big daddy?  Conservative Christians try to follow the Bible.  That does not mean we can only vote for perfect Christians, as none exist.  You simply let your Christian worldview guide you and you vote for those you consider to be the best given the circumstances.  I admit to certain biases - it would require extraordinary circumstances for me to vote for anyone who justifies abortion or declares that the biblical condemnation of homosexual acts "no longer applies."

(10/29/2018) Stephen Hawking’s Final Salvo Against God.  It is rather sad, really.  Perhaps Hawking had a change of heart and mind at the very end.  Too bad more atheists refuse to debate theists in a public setting, rather than just pontificate where they can ignore any challenges.  But this is quite understandable - atheists, whether debating the existence of God or evolution / intelligent design, have a very poor record of success.

(10/26/2018) Does America Need God to Be Moral?  More and more people say "No," and at the same time, more and more people say that America, as a whole, is becoming less and less moral.  They don't seem to want to make the connection between declining morals and not depending of God for our moral guidance.  Sad.

(10/20/2018) Ready for the Coming Hostility? Go to Church!  Church attendance and Christian fellowship is critical for all believers.  For those who claim that individual or family "worship" is just as good as going to church, I ask one question: How often do you actually do it?

(10/20/2018) The New College Class on Reading the Bible Will Leave Christians Everywhere Furious.  Well, it is just another "queer theory" approach to the Bible.  Question: when someone justifies their sin - and not repenting of it - by saying "God made me that way," is that not a form of "taking God's name in vain?"

(10/19/2018) The State of Theology.  Interesting survey results here.  The question is, are churches doing a lousy job teaching the fundamentals of Christianity, or a lot of Christians letting culture or their own personal preferences override the teachings of the Bible?  The biggest problem boils to be not accepting the Bible as God's Word.  Why else would a majority say that the Bible's condemnation of homosexual behavior "no longer applies?"

(10/19/2018) Limbaugh: 'We Are Seriously at a Tipping Point...Close to Losing Our Country As Founded.'  I believe he is correct and the number one factor is that we, as a nation, have turned our backs on God.  Will God intervene?  I believe that God has intervened in the past and I pray that he does so again.  And I pray that God revive us again as there is little purpose in saving us if we won't turn back to him.  Ralated: Benham Brothers: America Is a Nation in Need of Restoration.

(10/13/2018) J. Warner Wallace, Cold-Case Detective: Evidence Led Him to Faith.  Interesting.

(10/13/2018) New Pre-Highlighted Bible Released.  This is from The Babylon Bee, so it is satire.  Sad to say, I suspect that if a pre-highlighted version of the Bible were actually offered, it would sell more than a few copies.

(09/29/2018) Am I a Bigot?  Perhaps, but not if your beliefs and actions are grounded in biblical truth.  I don't know how many Christians think they might be a bigot because the LGBTetc crowd (and others) call them that, but I know a lot of Christians do not like being called a bigot and hence keep silent on a host of subjects such as SSM.  Which is why we now have SSM and abortion and our culture continues to decline - though there are some signs of hope today.  Get off the fence and into the arena.

(09/27/2018) God’s Word for America.  We'd better start listening.  Key point - the Kavanaugh battle has little to do with Kavanaugh and everything to do with abortion.  Anyone Trump nominates is going to suffer the same sort of slander that Kavanaugh is.  Abortion is a sacrament for the Left and is directly or indirectly responsible for much / most of the the decline in American culture and society.  As someone pointed out, if Kavanaugh favored abortion, the Dems would approve him in a minute, even if all the accusations against him were proven to be true.  Update: The Kavanaugh Battle Is The Culmination Of Unanswered Leftist Kulturkampf.  We are in a war.  The other side is fighting no holds barred - including lies and slander - and most of us are just sitting on the sidelines.

(09/25/2018) Pence, Conservative Leaders Urge Activists to ‘Surpass the Energy of the American Left.’  Why is it that progressives seem to believe more in their political "religion" than we evangelicals do about the gospel of Jesus Christ?  This election and the 2020 election are really going to dictate the future of America and hence the world.  The Democrats have already indicated their disdain for the First Amendment, for believers, for judges who won't legislate from the bench, for pro-lifers, ....  Well, the list is much longer.  Why does the Left have more fervor?  Because they invest everything in politics and we do not.  But if we stay aloof, our aloofness is going to come back and bite us most severely.

(09/25/2018) Backlash after Sarah Sanders slammed for Christian faith.  The Left, and this includes the MSM, are working very hard to drive Christians and Christianity out of the public square.  Do not let them get away with it.

(09/25/2018) Spiritual-warfare expert: 'Demonic component' to divided U.S.  Not that I disagree, but I do wonder what it takes to call oneself a "spiritual warfare expert."

(09/22/2018) Reason is the Friend of Faith — and Faith is the Friend of Reason.  Absolutely.

(09/09/2018) Thousands of Christians defy own churches' 'social justice' campaigns.  Having done it myself, I used to think that when a denomination strayed from biblical teaching, one should stick around and fight.  But you are only harming yourself by doing so, and you are only giving more life to that denomination.  It is far better to leave and find a sound, Bible-believing church - which we did.

(09/08/2018) Those Who Lack a Belief In God Usually Lack an Argument.  I think the fundamental reason people do not believe in God is because with belief comes responsibility.  Many would rather not, so to speak.  And it is far easier do simply declare God to be an imaginary sky creature and the Bible a book of myths than to make an argument.  In all fairness, that is not what the atheist in the article did, but it is typical.

(09/07/2018) No foundation, no morals.  As Christians, this seems obvious to us.  It is less obvious to non-believers.  The comments are interesting.  Some claim that what you believe is not important, but merely how you act.  This fits in with the fact that half of Americans think that being "basically good" is what gets you into heaven.  Since most people consider themselves basically good, they think there is nothing else they need to do.  Very comforting, but very risky.

(08/29/2018) What Nonreligious People Get Wrong About Religious People.  I don't agree with all the specifics mentioned in the article, but the fact is that I have yet to find a person of the Left - and this includes leftist "Christians" - that has a clue about evangelical Christians.  They have created a handmaid's tale image in their mind, and no amount of explanation, observation, examples or facts is going to change that view (unless they actually become conservative and / or Christian).  Their entire worldview is dependent on their notion of their own moral superiority.

(08/27/2018) The Crisis in the Catholic Church.  This is the best article on the subject that I have read.  Update: This article is possibly even better: Prelates and Pederasts.

(08/26/2018) God Chose Trump.  Is this an outrageous statement?  Before Trump got the Republican nomination, I would have said yes.  But the 2016 election has seemed to me to be the first election that God actually intervened in.  I could be wrong, of course, but God has often chosen the very flawed and unexpected to do his work.  Read the article and see what you think.

(08/25/2018) ‘So Are You Now, or Have You Ever Been, an Evangelical?’  If we keep a low profile, we are pretty safe.  Is that what the Bible calls us to do?  I think not.

(08/25/2018) This would be the funniest video ever if it were on The Babylon Bee. But it’s not. It’s about a real progressive church.  You have to see it to believe it.  But "funny" is not the word I'd use.  By the way, check out the The Babylon Bee.  It is a Christian humor / satire site and it really is funny.

(08/20/2018) The Fantasy of 'Christian Supremacy.'  There seem to be a lot of fantasies running around these days.  But surely one of the most absurd is that Christians are trying to impose a theocracy in the United States.

(08/11/2018) What Do We Do, Now That We're the Enemy?  The Stream is going to have articles on this topic every Saturday going forward.  This is important and I strongly encourage you to read this article.  And here is the first in the new series: You Have a Purpose. He Needs You Ready.  I am creating a new archive to keep these articles together.  Here it is: Spiritual Readiness.

(08/03/2018) Playing at Christianity.  Much food for thought here.  Be sure to read the comments.  If I were to offer up a single takeaway it would be that discipleship is just as important as evangelism.  And Christ tells us this: go and make disciples.  I fear that many churches neglect discipleship in favor of evangelism.  Well, many neglect both.  I am grateful that FBC takes both seriously.

(08/02/2018) The American Art of Renewal.  Never underestimate the power of America, especially when enough Americans get behind an objective.  I'd say that we now have enough Americans that really do want to Make America Great Again.  This article doesn't focus on revival at all, yet revival is something that had renewed America several times.

(07/23/2018) Mike Pompeo Will Host First-Ever ‘Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom.’  Good.

(07/23/2018) The Religious Left’s Top 5 Distorted Teachings at Wild Goose.  Only 5?

(07/21/2018) Handling Ethical Issues: Five Reasons Your Church Probably Isn’t Teaching Enough On It.  Some churches do a pretty good job on what I will call personal ethics.  I believe we at FBC do.  But what about going beyond how we as individuals conduct ourselves.  It is pretty easy for most Christians not to engage in homosexual acts.  It is a lot harder to speak out publicly against SSM, using the bathroom of your choice, etc.  In today's sinking culture, merely behaving ethically as an individual is not enough and I wish (and pray) that more churches would take a lead in being cultural activists.  For the long term, I believe evangelism and discipleship are the most important things we can do.  but short term there are a lot of battles that the church should be fighting, but is not.  Lost ground is hard to retake.

(07/13/2018) Episcopal Church Allows Priests To Perform Same-Sex Marriages, Even If Their Bishops Object.  This simply means that more congregations are likely to leave the denomination - and that is a good thing.  It is a shame that they have chosen to go in this direction, however.  Growing up I knew a lot of Episcopal clergy (fathers of friends and friends of our family) and they were fine Christians.  I wonder what they would think were they alive today.

(07/11/2018) Mystery of Liberal Church Decline.  Actually, it is no mystery, but don't expect liberals to understand that.

(07/08/2018) Episcopal 'Book of Prayer' making God gender-neutral?  Many denominations have been working hard to recreate God in their own image.

(06/13/2018) Rule Upon Godless Rule: How Not To Repair Our Broken World.  Anyone who tries to keep up with "truth" as defined by culture is in for a hard slog.  Those "truths" keep changing.  I have a blog post on the subject: The Truth Will Set You Free

(06/13/2018) Kasie Hunt Badgers Jim Jordan Over Tough Immigration Policy — Is It A ‘Christian Approach’?  I really get annoyed when people whose Christianity is marginal at best, presume to lecture serious Christians about what it means to be a Christian.

(06/13/2018) Georgia Church Kicked Out of Southern Baptist Convention Over Racism.  Hmm.  It is hard to tell whether it was actual racism, perceived racism, or something else.  But when you have two congregations sharing a facility and problems arise, it is pretty easy for each side to take the attitude that everything is the other group's fault.  It is clear that this church has not tried to resolve their differences in an appropriate manner.  Hopefully they can learn to do so.

(06/08/2018) Become One of Christian History’s Heroes, Not Its Zeroes.  Far, far too many Christians qualify as Zeroes.  Don't be one of them.

(06/07/2018) Liberal Christian Leader Tony Campolo: 'God is Not in Control.'  Hmm.  Interesting spin.  Question: why do so many liberal theologians and pastors think they are smarter and wiser than God?  Apparently because they think so little of God that they don't think he is in control.

(06/04/2018) Conservatives Must Build Their Own Culture or Be Exiles Inside Their Own Society.  Maybe we should do the same with "Christians."  But we really don't need to "build" that culture.  It already exists.  We just need to boldly stand up for it.  For the most part, we have been passive when others are working hard to tear down our culture.  Don't.  Be.  Passive.

(06/02/2018) Joel Osteen's Church Has a $90 Million Annual Budget.  That's no big deal; it is a very large church.  But how much goes to missions?  $1.2 million.  On a percent of budget basis, FBC Black Forest gives more than 15 times as much.

(06/01/2018) Largest Evangelistic Event in U.S. History Coming to Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium.  June 10.  I bet you didn't know about this!

(05/30/2018) Is Christian Activism Biblical?  I suppose it depends on the definition, but yes.  We are to be witnesses, and not just on an individual, one-on-one basis, but on a societal basis.  But at the same time, we must be careful not to inappropriately mix our Christian activism with that which is purely political activism.  The fact is, in general, we Christians are not nearly as activist as we can and should be.  Would American culture be as degraded as it is if we had done a better job as "activists?"

(05/30/2019) Graham Responds to the Episcopal Church Removing ‘Husband and Wife’ From Vows.  If there are any Bible believing Episcopalians left, it is time to beat a hasty retreat and depart.

(05/18/2018) Rev. Graham Slams Episcopal Church on 'Marriage' Change: 'Caving to the Gay Agenda.'  Clearly a great many people, including many who consider themselves to be Christian, consider their wisdom to be superior to God's wisdom.  Slamming the Episcopal Church for their latest step away from the Bible hardly seems worth the effort.  Any Christians remaining in the Episcopal Church should just head for the exits.  There are plenty of Bible believing churches that would welcome them.

(05/17/2018) Liberals aghast after Perkins named to USCIRF.  Perkins has had the audacity to criticize Islam.  But they would be aghast at any strong Bible-believing Christian. For some reason they think that being a critic of Islam is a problem, but I doubt they would have any qualms about a critic of Christianity.

(05/13/2018) I have been on a truth binge recently.  Every time I open the Bible, it seems to me to be staring me in the face.  But not just the Bible.  The news is full of lies and misrepresentations being peddled as truth, as well as simply suppressing and ignoring the truth.  Now I have encountered a pair of good articles on the subject.  Part 1: How to Renew Our Witness and Make Christianity Counter-Cultural Again.  Part 2: We Know the Truth: To Renew Our Witness and Make Christianity Counter-Cultural Again

(05/12/2018) Garry Wills' Tissue of Lies.  A Church-bashing Catholic whitewashes the Qur'an.  You will know them by their fruits.  This may apply to Willis, but it definitely applies to Muslims and Islam.  One of my favorites is that when it comes to things like "honor killings," the excuse is that they are "cultural" and don't have anything to do with Islam.  Christianity took hold in many "cultures" that had plenty of barbaric "cultural practices."  Where Christianity has taken hold, barbaric practices have been discarded.  When Islam has taken hold, they have not.  In some cases, I would argue, they have gotten worse.  Anyone that tries to whitewash Islam - an that includes whitewashing the Qur'an and Hadith - is simply defending the indefensible.  So why so so many feel compelled to do it?   In America, the primary motive is probably virtue signalling.  In Europe, possibly denial.

(05/10/2018) Tucker Carlson: ‘Modern Liberalism Is a Religious Movement’ to Replace Christianity.  That is why the Left wants to silence or water-down Christianity - they are actively working on both.  They wish to be in charge of defining what truth is, and Christianity is the biggest obstacle in their way.

(05/10/2018) *Sigh* No, Being A Christian Does Not Require You Meekly Submit To Leftist Tyranny.  "Sigh" is right.  I think the biggest problem is that we don't even see ourselves in a battle.  And we somehow think that what battles there are are really secular ones so there is not need to stick our necks out.  Wrong!  Satan is hard a work and he is winning.  Read this article and then get out on the front lines.

(05/09/2018) Bestselling Author: America Needs a New Great Awakening.  Of course we do!

(05/07/2018) Saudi Arabia Makes Historic Agreement with Vatican, Major Changes for Christianity Underway.  It remains to be seen as to where this will go.  But is it coincidence that Saudi Arabia is making major, major changes now.  Or does it have to do with the fact that we have made a major, major change in administrations?

(05/05/2018) Writing Is on the Wall for the West If We No Longer Treasure the Bible.  The fact is that the Bible and Christianity are the foundation for Western Civilization.  Remove that foundation and Western Civ crumbles.  Which, sad to say, is just what an awful lot of people want.  Not that they have anything to replace it with other than a hodgepodge of ideas, almost all of which have been tried before and have consistently failed.  "But we'll get it right this time!"

(05/02/2018) Adviser to Pope Francis Praises Karl Marx, Claims No Link to Communist Atrocities.  Sigh.  Francis is a disaster, and I'm not sure that it will be easy to undo the damage he is doing.  That said, there as some exaggerations and misrepresentations making him look even worse than he is.  Such is not the case here.

(05/02/2018) Has Archaeological Evidence of King David’s Kingdom Been Found? New Discovery Offers Clues.  Apparently there has been a recent push to declare that King David was just a myth rather than real.

(04/29/2018) Pew's Dubious Results on Faith in America.  But whether the results are accurate or not, we Christians have a lot of work to do.  Our country continues to slide downhill culturally, socially and spiritually.  Are we going to try, with God's help, to do something about it, or are we just going to slide along with everyone else?

(04/22/2018) Why Isn’t the Church More Eagerly Embracing Apologetics?  Good question.  I believe that many Christians are silent about their faith because they don't know how to defend it!  They are afraid they'll get a challenging question or charge and be unable to effectively respond.  I wouldn't be surprised if this is a bigger reason for our failure to witness than mere timidity.

(04/20/2018) Williams: GQ Magazine Deems the Holy Bible One of the Most Overrated Books of All Time.  One of the biggest problems with mankind is our arrogance.  This is a perfect example.  Of course, it seems to me that the prime purpose of the original article is to get clicks, so ....

(04/16/2018) Providence College: Catholic or Counter-Catholic?  It has certainly abandoned traditional Catholic teaching, in particular where it dovetails with evangelical views.  In this case, that means support for traditional marriage.  What is shocking is the harassment and violence threatened against a supporter of traditional marriage while supporters of SSM face no such intimidation.  Far too many dollars flow from churches and denominations into institutions that oppose everything those churches and denominations stand for.  Drop. the. support!

(04/10/2018) Christianity Under Fire at Harvard.  Sadly, no one is surprised.  Current thinking in America today seems to be that progressives are far smarter and wiser than God.  That may be the thinking, but that doesn't mean we have to go along with it.

(04/09/2018) FRC debunks NPR claim of evangelical 'concern' over Trump.  The Left is desperate to get rid of Trump, and one way to do it is to reduce his evangelical support.  Is it not remarkable how many non-evangelicals have been weighing in on why evangelicals should not support Trump?

(04/09/2018) Another Local Church Abandons its Denomination for Failing to Defend the Faith.  This time it  would be the United Methodist Church.  Local churches have been leaving the Episcopalian Church and the PCUSA for years.  What about the Lutherans?  It seems that while the mainline denominations have been abandoning Scripture in favor of culture, many local churches and members have been abandoning the mainline denominations.

(04/09/2018) Wake Forest Religion Professor: Christianity “Fundamentally Evil.”  He also says that belief in an objective truth “is the most tremendous evil that is responsible for all the great suffering in the world.”  In Spiritual Formation class we talked about how Satan's first step in an attack is to blind.  Blind to what?  Blind to truth - every kind of truth.  And as Christians, it is critical that we focus of that which is absolutely, positively true.

(04/05/2018) Islam’s ‘Abrahamic’ Dilemma.  When someone talks about the three Abahamic religious traditions, don't buy into it.  The purpose is to claim that Islam really comes from the same roots as Judaism and Christianity.  It does not.  The article explains why.

(04/04/2018) Google snubbed Easter with no doodle for 18th year in a row, Christians say.  Google does honor a lot of stuff, but not Easter.  Normally, I would not care, but these trends are worrisome.

(04/03/2018) CNN claims the Easter story, about Jesus’ death and resurrection, is a ‘#MeToo moment.’  Sigh.

(04/02/2018) Grappling with Evil Amid a Decline in Religious Faith.  Be sure to read the comments.  The non-religious types are doing exactly what the author indicated: trying to find materialist answers for the evil that exists.  Or simply ignoring the problem of evil altogether.
