Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. First Amendment to the US Constitution
Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31b-32 (NIV)
There are some in this country that would be happy to forbid praying in public. Yet what better example of people using their first amendment rights than this?
That said, 'Saying Grace' recently set at auction record for a Norman Rockwell painting at $46M.
(03/16/2016) Texas sheriff sued for placing crosses on patrol cars. Folks, we have to start pushing back rather than rolling over.
(03/08/2016) Georgia Chamber of Commerce Attacks Religious Liberty to Protect their Profits. I'm not convinced it is to 'protect profits.' But one thing is certain: the C of C does not seem to care about small businesses run by people of strong faith.
(03/01/2016) University president celebrates ‘inclusiveness’ by excluding conservative speaker. We certainly have reached "1984" a lot faster than I expected.
(03/01/2016) Lamar Advertising Won't Run Pro-Freedom Billboards - Look What They Did Run. Well, if you display anti-Israel billboards, no one is going to hurt you. If you quote Muhammad in a critical fashion, someone just might.
(03/01/2016) We all have a right to freedom of speech, but students also have a right to be educated without fear. Right. Just the other day I was reading the "education without fear" clause of the Constitution. It sure trumps some old quaint notion of "free speech." /sarc
(02/26/2016) Ben Shapiro speaks at California campus, all hell breaks loose. Read it and weep. With a few exceptions our education system has totally failed us and our tax dollars are paying for it. Are colleges producing our next generation of leaders? We had better hope and pray not. It might be best to skip a generation and see if we can right the ship in the meantime.
(02/08/2016) Free speech now seen as lobbying by New York State regulators. If I understand this correctly, if I were to use this website to advocate that NY citizens write their state representatives to encourage them to vote for or against certain legislation, I would be a 'lobbyist' and subject to regulation.
(02/08/2016) The Liberal Mythology on Separation of Church and State. We have really let ourselves be bamboozled. Since when did 'Congress shall pass no law respecting an establishment of religion' mean HS football coaches cannot pray on the field, etc.? The First Amendment specifically limits only Congress and only in respect to passing laws. It does not say - neither federal, state nor local government nor said government employees in their job capacity (including breaks and donated time) can in any way shape or form do anything to favor one religion over another or to express religious views in any manner. Yet that is how it is interpreted. And we as individuals and as churches have been pretty passive about all this.
(01/30/2016) Government seeks 'authority to determine what is sin.' Legal team warns of ramifications of wrong decision at Supreme Court. There was a time when I would have considered such warnings overwrought. But given the Court's willingness to legislate from the bench - completely unconstitutional - nothing seems beyond the realm of possibility anymore.
(01/25/2016) Watch These Hillary Supporters Get Asked To Sign Petition To Repeal The Bill Of Rights. To be fair, it is quite possible that many others would sign such a petition if they were told that their favorite candidate supported it. Still, it is a sad commentary no matter how you slice it.
(01/23/2016) Christians booted from 'safe playground,' Supremes step in. Hmm.
(01/16/2016) Tubal Litigation: The ACLU's War on Conscience. It almost seems that we can use a conscience objection as long as it isn't based on Christianity or Judaism.
(01/15/2016) San Francisco park employee fired for conducting a baptism during his lunch hour. It looks like religion is one of the few things that we are NOT permitted to freely practice these days.
(01/06/2016) Pastor in Northern Ireland Proclaimed Not Guilty of Hate Speech. One of my gripes is hearing about a situation and then never finding out how it ends. Here we can add a happy ending to something we linked to before.
